Scouting the New Community

 

Before you decide on a new property be sure that it has all of the basic necessities and amenities your pet will need. Ask you real estate agent to provide you with a list of nearby veterinarians, dog parks, groomers, day care, boarding facilities, and pet stores.

 

Find the Perfect Home

 

What will your pet need in the perfect home? Do you want a fenced yard, no stairs, or designated pet area? Be sure to let your agent know how many pets you have, size, and what type. Some HOAs and Condos have pet restrictions, you don’t want to make an offer on a property that will not suit your pet.

 

Long Distance Moves-Find a Pet-Friendly Hotel

 

Before you move you will need to research pet-friendly hotels. Not all Hotels/Motels allow pets and for those that do there may be a pet fee, restrictions on the number of pets, and size of pet.

 

Travel Arrangements

 

If at all possible, transport your pet by car, but if it is necessary to fly be sure to reserve with the airlines well in advance of the trip. Every airline has different regulations for the transport of pets. Some airlines will allow small dogs or cats to ride in the cabin with their family. If your pet is brachycephalic ie…Bulldog, Frenchie, Pug, or Boston, flying in the baggage area can be life threatening. Never sedate your pet if they will be flying.

 

Vaccination Records

 

Be sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines and you have a current record. You may also be required to have a Pet Health Certificate. Check with the airline and if leaving the Country check the regulations of the Country where you will live.

 

Check Your Pet’s ID

 

If your pet is micro-chipped be sure all their information is up to date. If they have ID tags be sure the current information is on those as well.

 

Hire a Pet Sitter

 

Many pets do not handle the chaos of moving well. Try to hire a pet sitter, doggy daycare, friend, or relative to sit during the move. If this is not possible put your pet in quiet room and try keep up their normal routine as much as possible.

 

Pet Medications and Moving Bag

 

Be sure you have all the medications you will need for at least a week. Pack your pet an overnight bag with several days of medication, food, toys, bedding, litter box, crate, and grooming aids.

 

Moving is stressful for owners and pets, but with a well-planned moving day you and your pet will enjoy moving into your new home.
